The DPU is co-ordinating a DfiD/ESCOR sponsored action-research project entitled "Making Evaluation Real and Useful for Networks". The project is managed by Claudy Vouhe of the Gender Policy and Planning Programme, working with Madeline Church - ABColombia network coordinator - and Mark Bitel, an evaluation consultant.

The research is concerned with the evaluation of networks, ie. whether and how EXTERNALLY FUNDED networks evaluate themselves, what methodologies they are using, how findings are implemented and with what impact. Ultimately, we would like the research to develop tools for evaluation that work in the unique context of networks and make evaluation "inspiring".

All the networks that have shown interest in the project so far are "development-oriented", and we are interested to hear from externally-funded networks dealing with housing and settlement issues. We would now like to invite the following to be part of the research:

a) externally-funded networks dealing with HS, particularly if they have evaluated/or are planning to evaluate their work AND b) donor organisations which are funding such networks, particularly if they have evaluated, or are planning to evaluate the networks they have funded.

A website will be operational from March 9th 2001 (www.ucl.ac.uk/dpu/evalnet.htm) but Madeline Church, the principal researcher can also provide additional information, including a questionnaire (in ENGLISH, FRENCH and SPANISH) for network co-ordinators. She can be contacted at: mad@evaluation.u-net.com
