Since Istanbul, my NGO ArcPeace has been involved in the construction of sustainable afforadable homes in the squatter settlements that surround Lima, Peru. It is a daunting task. An NGO that is a member of our international branch, Estrategia, has been instrumental in their attempt to implement Local Agenda 21.
Foremost among the problems that we have identified among the many issues that revolve around the construction of sustainable affordable housing is the lack of political will. And the traditional mistrust between the public and the private sector. We attempt to work with both. The task is beyound challanging, yet we continue.
These words have been stated before, we know what to do and what not to do, yet the same errors are repeated again and again. Perhaps we should examine the motives among world nations. Might not the simple admission that we can learn from each other contribute to a first step toward the developement of sustainable urban environments.
